Super Camera!

Toss up between this & the Canon Ixus 75. Decided to go for this as I wanted a bit more than point & click. I used to have a Canon Powershot A95 & this completely walks all over it. The colours are miles better. Heartily recommended to anyone who wants a lot in a small package.

I did a whole heap of research before buying this camera, as well as waiting for it to drop to the lowest price possible. I followed a lot of advice and when I finally bought it on June 5th I also bought

Having already had Fujis I had a memory card already, so when it arrived, I assembled it all and headed out. I figured I'd start in Auto mode, just to see how it went...and it didn't go well. All the pictures seemed to be over-exposed - no matter what I did. I tried a few other things - Landscape setting seemed to work better, but changing the light measurement to spot etc didn't help. I even found a couple of reviews suggesting the over-exposure was a feature of Fujis. However I've never found this, so eventually I gave up, and contacted Amazon. I returned it and received an exchange.

On to camera number 2. Having already decided that I liked using the camera, found it nice to use, with a good feel to it in the hand, I was really nervous that this one wouldn't work either...but phew, no such problems this time. There must have been some problem with the light metering on the other one. This one takes lovely crisp photos. It's really nice to use, and I'm starting to get the hang of the more complicated stuff. It can be hard to get it to focus on small foreground items, and not the larger background sometimes, but that might be me. It's got a much better zoom that my previous camera, which is great. I also like the manual zoom as it feels more precise than power zoom and is much quieter. The black & white mode is kinda fun and I've also had some great results with the macro.

Since then I've also bought it a bigger memory card,a SANDISK EXTREME III CF 2GB CARD, and some more Eneloop batteries so that there's always a set in and a set charged and ready to use. The bag fits perfectly - with enough room for batteries, spare cards as well as your mobile phone and small bits and bobs. I'd definitely recommend this camera, and am going to get a couple of lessons so as to get the best out of it. I can't afford an SLR and to be honest, I'm not sure I'd know what to do with one even if I could. This is the best choice for me - much better than my previous cameras, giving me the ability to learn how to do a whole heap of thing. I know this might sound weird - but it feels like a proper grownup camera :)

Excellence from Fuji

I only got this on saturday as a replacement for my brilliant but ageing Konica Minolta Z2 (4Mp 10X Optical zoom). The camera is fantastic, it feels weighty, solid and balanced, the grip is ideal and everything is within easy reach. On saturday night I took over 350 photos with this and over 500 in total at a Blues festival, in comparison to the Z2 this is a different class, the sheer ability of that huge 18x lens is wonderful, the image stabilisation works like a charm. I found that the photos taken on 'auto' were perfectly acceptable and, after talking to a professional photographer, manual setting were easy to set and produced outstanding results. The photos I took were taken in a dark tent, pointing into the stage lighting and most of them came of far better than expected. I love this camera for is solid easy to use style and that monster of a lens (yes size does matter) if you don't want to pay over the odds for a lower spec SLR buy this, in fact buy this anyway! To those who marked down as they recieved a faulty one, grow up! it happens. And to the persone who complained of excessive noise at full zoom I haven't noticed any but I didn't use the digital zoom on top which will cause a degradation of picture quality. Great camera, my first from Fuji and I think I will be sticking with them.

I Recieved this camera today and it was much more than what i expected, i have recently grown more interest in photography and thought it was about the right time to buy a low end D-SLR at first and this is great for just that. for more casual hobbists this camera is great, especially if you just want the camera to do the lot for you on auto, also there are pre-set settings for such things like portrait, landscape, sport etc. also if you want to improve your photography knowledge and want to change different effects on your images then you can either change the mode to manual so that you determine all of the settings, apperture prority so that the camera automatically sets the appertuer and your change the other settings, or shutter prority which is the same bu it changes the shutter qutomatically obviously.

Very nice camera indeed.

Problem that other reviewer had is not on mine at all, the only possible thing is in bright light conditions, when you auto focus there is a bright line across the LCD but it does not affect shooting whatsoever. Been able to capture some stunning sunsets with this beast as well as using it's very nice macro function. Shots are clear and great quality, the new dial system on here makes life so much easier than having to have a sperate dial to choose which shoot mode you want, its all in one place! If you're looking for a camera with looks, quality of image, and is easy to use, this is the one you want.

More pricey than some point and shoots but it's worth every penny!

Superb Value for Money

This little camera is fantastic value.

The optical zoom is easy to use and extremely good. In general it is a very simple to get to grips with and take great shots. My needs were simple I wanted a camera that I could take good quality pictures yet I could not justify spending a fortune on a true SLR camera. This little fuji ticks all the boxes.

You can use it in automatic mode or of course in manual as well as stages in between. It is less bulky than the SLR camera. I thought that I could always get a snap using my phone camera but wanted something that I could take out specifically to take quality shots. What I can say it is the best camera I have owned, even comparing it to my Nikon F50 35mm which I adore. The S5700 is worth every penny.

In general you do not need to spend a fortune on the SD card I bought a 1GB and download all my images after each excursion. I have never come close to filling the memory and I use it on its maximum setting for detail. I seem to singing this little fuji's praises. Well it is good.

In terms of the software it comes with it is OK but I tend not to use. I merely mention this and it does not detract from the camera or its usage in the field or in your home studio e.g. your PC.

well worth it

I love this camera ,it is light easy to use and the picture quality is superb. It will take in any light even direct sunlight.
The only down side is the digital zoom which needs to be used on a tripod or from a steady position and the image quality as can be expected is not the best.
Overall I would highly recommend this camera I have been thrilled with the results.

Nice little compact camera

Nice camera, quite funky looking and its very portable, not to bulging in the pocket. Although the only problem i seem to be having is that the face detection only detects one face out of like 6 people for example, but its not something i use to often anyway. And also i find sometimes the pictures tend to be a bit out of focus, but only in low light, so its somewhat understandable. All in all, its a good camera if your looking to take it out on nights out and festival events, but if your into arty type photography, go for a Canon or Nikon, as it lets you down when you want to do something fancy.

life in a barrel

very very dissapointing. The lens perfomance at the wide angle setting gives results worse than a single use plastic lens - the complete inability to render a straight line as anything other than a barrel shape made me return this camera. I have used Fuji cameras for 20 years including the previous digital models - this is the worst. avoid it. Back to my Samsung NV20

Great camera - impressive video capacity

Great little camera this, especially for the price.

Takes generally decent clear sharp photos, most impressive for me was the surprisingly good video it gives - not limited to 30 seconds like many cameras (it goes as long as you want in fact: 30 minutes on a 2GB card) and in quite amazing quality for such a little thing...

All fairly idiot-proof too which is handy.

Awesome compact, I take it everywhere!

This compact red offering from fuji is affordable and packs 7mega pixels and is full of features. It's slim sturdy body means it's easy to take where ever you go.

Great outside, but also brilliant in the dark because of it's high iso range. Focusing with compact like this at close macro range can be frustrating at times, but generally it's what you'd expect from a camera at this price.

This also has a great red eye removal feature and takes the popular SD card format, very cheap to buy. The built in battery is fantastic, and video is perfectly acceptable for a little digital snapper.

I love this camera!

I really do! My sister gave me her old Fujifilm camera when she got this one (in a different colour) and it was like a brick- so naturally I wanted one like hers, and I'm so glad I bought it. Best £100 I've spent in ages.

The camera takes a fantastic picture, and uses software that locates faces and modifies the light around them to improve picture quality and remove red eye. The finish is great- it's polished and feels smooth in your hands. The camera turns on by sliding open the lens and the whole thing is as easy to use as that.

Other than the colour and the metallic finish, what I really like is the battery. No more hunting around for triple AAA's, this camera includes a battery more like you would have in your mobile phone, which you remove to charge separately.

The camera comes with everything you need- the right leads and cables, a wrist tag to hold it with- except a case. You'll want one to stop it getting scratched up. The only other thing you might need is a memory card, but it does already have internal memory, so it really depends on how much space you need.

All in all a great looking camera, easy to use, fantastic picture, and a price you can't argue with! Five stars.

Im not normally a camera person, I always forget to take them wherever I go and even when I do take them I forget to take pictures. So...I thought I'd give the whole camera thing another try. Given the fact that I was fairly sure I wouldn't use it very often I figured I should get myself a cheap camera. I saw the Fuji Finepix and after looking around it appeared to be a fairly sure good option. When I received the camera the first thing I noticed was how small it felt. Now its not as small of some of the really expensive on the market but considering the price and the quality this is a very compact camera. Now...the quality...I must admit I wasn't expecting anything from this camera, I thought it would be average at best. I was therefore stunned to realise how good the quality was in this camera. The build quality was brilliant, everything felt solid, the buttons felt well built and and not the kind of quality you would expect from a unit in this price bracket. The picture quality was impressive, although not the best. The greatest thing about this camera is the value. It might not be the best camera on the market and it may not look like the best camera on the market but for the price it really is unbelievable.

This camera is not for the budding professional photographer, but for someone who wants a few holiday snaps or some photos on a night out this has got to be your best option. I have found that the 4x zoom is plenty for these kind of photos. The 9MP quality is also good enough for these kind photos. If you put the pictures from this camera onto a computer you will see the quality of this camera in full. The pictures look great, they are clear and crisp with great depth of color.

This camera has got me using cameras properly and I really didn't expect that from something of this price.

Fantastic for the price!

I've now had this camera for a couple of weeks and have to say it's so far so good. Having owned a couple of smaller Fuji models, I umm-ed and ahh-ed over whether to go for a larger bodied camera or just another small compact that could easily fit in my pocket. In the end, I eventually decided to go for the larger one on the assumption that if I ever want to get more into photography I'd need something with a little more"horse power" than a 3x optical zoom. It'll probably never happen but there's always time left yet. (I've also now bought a Samsung NV8 to take care of my compact needs which I'll review separately).

While it feels large next to my compacts, when stood alongside my old 35mm Canon EOS 700 from way back in the early 90's, it's tiny by comparison and it makes you realise just how small gadgets have become over the last two decades. However, although it feels nice and solid, it is still reasonably chunky and heavy and you certainly do have to wear it round your neck which can become rather a drag after a while...

The photos I've taken so far are perfectly okay but then again I'm a philistine and will readily admit that I don't have an eye for professional photography. However, neither are most other people and you're almost certainly going to look the part at weddings and parties unless there's a real pro in the house! It doesn't have red eye reduction (which I thought it might when I bought it) but so far I've only managed to take one red eye photo of my daughter who I was beginning to think was borne of the devil judging by my previous cameras! The batteries - I use 2000mh rechargeables - seem to last for ever even with fairly high use of the zoom and my insistence on taking three shots of everything I choose to shoot. If there is to be a negative, it's the small fact that the cable link is yet another non-standard size USB one (I now have three Fuji cameras all with different size cables!) meaning yet another cable to store safely.

So while this isn't exactly a review - there are professionals who can do that properly elsewhere - I'll just offer my opinion that this is a very nice camera which I certainly don't regret buying - something you can't always say these days with so much over-hyped, over-priced garbage around. There's definitely room for my skills to grow with this camera and I'd just better get out there and start making use of everything on the S5800 that I'm sure is idly waiting for me there ready to use.

bought this blind but am glad I did!

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of reviews for this camera, and, while I've only had mine for a couple of weeks, I thought I'd let other potential buyers have the chance to read a review before Christmas.

So you know what background I have, I upgraded from a Panasonic LC70 (aka brick), with 4MP.

Positives:

Looks really cool
Has some good modes - auto and natural/flash (where it takes 2 simultaneously, one with, one without flash)
Small
Good zoom levels
Intuitive controls
Light
Huge screen
Good Stabilisation

Gripes:

Can sometimes be a bit grainy - wasn't expecting that from an 8MP
Face detection doesn't really work

superb!

This is an excellent camera for anyone who needs a digi cam for general use. First off, the picture quality for close up shots and landscapes is absolutely superb. The colours that come out on the close ups are incredible, and so unexpected for such a small (and relatively cheap!) camera. The menu is easy to use - with approx. 8 different settings, and there has been no compatibility issues with using with Vista. The black and white option also takes very good quality photographs.

The only downside is for long distance shots and night shots. Both of these (say at use for concerts or at sporting events) aren't so great. The night shots sometimes seem a little grainy, and any bright lights seem to hinder the camera's avalibility to pick up details well. The zoom is good, but I have found that it sometimes comes out slightly grainy on full zoom.

Overall though, an excellent, easy to use camera which, in 99% of cases, takes beautiful pictures and picks up on colour excellently.

Well worth the money and ideal for anyone who doesn't want to spend a vast amount of money but wants high quality, high colour photographs.
