Great value for money!

I've been checking the prices for 2gb SD memory cards for a few weeks and when i found the fuji 2gb card i ordered it straight away and i'm so glad i did, and what a bonus it was delivered to me in super quick time.

RIP OFF post & packing

Just bought new Finepix from Amason. Wanted 1GB cards, so keyed in 5 no at 3.98 each only to find cariage is £22.95 (more than the product. Cards weight about 5grammes each; all 5 don't come to an oz. Selected 'cancel' Keep your cards!!! My advice is don't deal via Amazon!!

a non anorak view

I rarely write reviews but having read some of the ones hear I felt I had to. If you buy equipment and its faulty then send it back, if it continues to be faulty then send it back, get a refund and buy something else, dont slag it off straight away. Also dont compare sparkling wine to champagne as this is unfair to those who relay on reviews to make their judgement. If you are that good at photography or that serious why the hell are you buying a camera that costs £ 150.00. For those of you who want an honest review - this is worth every penny. The zoom is very good, the menu like all new toys is fine once you have used it a few time, the functions such as stability work well. One point here, who uses an 18 x zoom to take serious photos without a tripod or stable base - mmmm. Even your best SLRs would quiver at that thought. Grainy pictures means the settings are wrong or the camera is faulty, or they are called mobile phones, 8mp cameras with good lens systems are not grainy and none of the pics I have taken indoors, outdoors and on full zoom have been so.
In short if you want a camera that, as some have said, is the next step up from a compact then you cant go too far wrong with this one. If you want to take videos buy a video camera, if you want to choose between lens composition, raw and jpeg files and want full picture editing then buy an SLR.

Simply stunning pocket camera

I am a professional photographer and shoot all day with a Canon 1D, 5D and 40D. I purchased this for my wife as a 'take anywhere' camera and have to say that it is absolutely brilliant. Focusing is fast and accurate (even in low light), the large screen is nice and bright, and face detection is superb. The only downside is the interface which is a bit clunky and dated but you get used to it.
But at the end of the day the ONLY thing that matters with any camera is picture quality and for this the little fujifilm is top of its class. Even better than the Canon IXUS range?? Oh yes, you won't be dissapointed.

Great Camera but not 5 star

I brought this camera as my second semi-pro if you like camera. I needed a new camera for taking snaps in Africa and hopefully Iraq that gave me help but also freedom. This camera provides all the necessary functions for a young and aspiring camera enthusiast who wants to get a grip of a more basic camera, however at the same time enables you to have freedom with your picture that you could get with a slightly more expensive camera, changing shutter speed etc. I am a keen photographer and after seeing this camera published in an old copy of the national geographic decided to explore its capabilities. As I have said maybe not a buy for the professional, but definitely in the realm of semi-pro, and at great value for money. The only reason I didn't give this camera 5 stars is because of its battery life. When flicking from setting to setting or changing functions a lot as one does it seems that the batteries last for no more than 5 hours or there abouts. I don't know why Fuji film didn't decide to put a lithium Ion battery in it, but I am sure they have their reasons. I am now looking into a rechargeable option of buying rechargeable batteries and charger for the camera, and if you were to buy this camera (and it is great) I would recommend you look into a different source of power than plain old AA batteries.

Fuhi F100FD

First shot I took (low light, indoors at night) I could see the pink banding problem!

Upgraded the firmware & I haven't seen it since.

I hummed and hah'ed becuase of the pink banding but now I'm very happy with my purchase. The images are really *really* vivid. I had a chance to pit this camera against my mates TZ (can't remember the exact model, but it's last years model)....the Fuji won in every photo class.

I'm not some happy snapper...I'm seriously into photography (have SLR & a host of dedicated lenses), so when I say I'm anal about this stuff....you can be sure that if I'm satisfied that I'm a tough cookie to please.

Only downside to date, is the 'wheel of fortune' menu dial. For example if you want to go to video recording mode & you happen to started turning the dial the wrong way, it can be about 12-15 clicks away before you get the mode you want!

In short...if you're hesitant because of thepink banding (like I was) - don't be. In real life it won't be a problem...& you'll simply just have stunning photos.

life in a barrel

very very dissapointing. The lens perfomance at the wide angle setting gives results worse than a single use plastic lens - the complete inability to render a straight line as anything other than a barrel shape made me return this camera. I have used Fuji cameras for 20 years including the previous digital models - this is the worst. avoid it. Back to my Samsung NV20

Fuji Finepix S5800 Digital Camera

I purchased the S5800 last weekend(6/7/08) Have just received it. I must say it was very well packaged. It arrived when Amazon said it would, outstanding service and the price was unbleiveable. Amazon used the Home Network Delivery Couriers, which was great, you could track the parcel online. Having read some of the other reviews I was abit concerned about the manual being in French. I opened the box and found the manual and all other paperwork was in English, thank god, although the wife can speak and read french. The camera was very easy to setup, and within a couple of minutes I was ready to snap my first victim!. The 8.0 mega pixels raally make a difference from my old Fuji, being only 2.0 mega pixels. You can see a real depth and more sharper image. Its very comfortable to hold, with the capture button and zoom switch being in the same place. Its also nice to able to switch between the view finder and the 2.5" screen. I would not hesitate to recommend this camera or any of the Fuji range. One tip use the XD card the images seem more sharper and more depth of colour.

I know this is supposed to be about the product but lots of reviewers are discussing delivery etc.

So - just to let you know - ordered over the weekend, arrived tuesday morning, well packed, original fuji card in packaging and works well in camera - though have to agree with others it is a little slower than the 1gb - but i only really noticed because I was looking!

Excellent service with good information to contact if any problems. Would recommend and use again.

Fantastic

This camera is a fantastic present for someone the quality of the pictures is amazing and the battery lasts for a very long time.

Really good! cannot recommend it enough

Like other reviewers here, I am very pleased with this item. It feels like realy quality, and serious thought has gone into the design. I especially like the divider in the main pouch which you can move - meaning whatever size your camera, the pouch will be a perfect snug fit. It'll fit loads: my S5700, spare batteries, charger+adaptors, USB cable - it's not just a camera case, it's an everything-you-need-for-photography case. Oh, it also fits a spare pair of headphones for my MP3 player.
And it is very, very cheap. Go for it!

BRILLIANT! WONDERFUL QUALITY PICS!!!!!

i got the finepix f40 fd for my birthday and was amazed at the quality of the photos. as soon as i opened the box i thought the camera must have cost around £200-£300 because i previously owned the kodak c875 which despite it having many great features such as a 5xoptical zoom and 8.1mp quality pics, turned out to be discraceful and my holiday pictures in 2007 were horrible and dark. however the finepix f40 fd will give me superb holiday pics for my holiday this august 2008 and i am already snapping away! whatever you decide, BUY THIS CAMERA, YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED. THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THE CAMERA IS SOME PEOPLE EXPECT FAR TOO MUCH DESPITE IT HAVING EVERYTHING YOU COULD ASK FOR!!!!!! HOPE THIS HELPED U . JJ...

Disappointing

The reason this camera is getting 3 stars is because the macro mode - when used PROPERLY can produce a very sharp crystal clear close up picture that will even pick up ALL the lines in your finger if you take a picture of your fingerprint.


Otherwise, this is a severe disappointment. I read all the reviews, it got some great ones, but after having used the product, I have to say I'm severly sorry I spent my money on this and wished I'd gotten perhaps an Olympus or something from the Fuji S series.

Although this is a 7 mega pixel camera, the quality of the photos barely shows as 1 megapixel. Every picture comes out extremely grainy even after changing every exposure setting, ISO setting, and flash setting.

The fact detection is finicky and doesn't work all the time.

Pictures taken on sunny afternoons come out blue - even again after changing for various outdoor settings.

If you like Photography and are looking for something that will get you some great pictures, try a different camera. This is sufficient as a"fun snapping" camera for some spur of the moment events and parties, but is nowhere near capable of the photography that something from the Fuji S series can provide.

Amazing and pretty!

I got this camera for christmas.

I LOVE it! Its SO pretty!

Its little and compact and has so many different settings for taking pictures such as at the beach, or for moving about piccys.

The red eye removal is a good idea. I love the fact it can take both xd and sd. My previous camera was a fuji and takes only xd. But our digital photo frame only takes SD (my husbands camera is sd) so i can now use it!

A vital purchase...

I wish to earn back some respect for this product! Many reviews here down rate the XD card for the wrong reasons - I'm afraid that if it is not compatible with your camera it's your own fault, not the XD card's!!!

Now, as memory cards go, there is nothing wrong with the 512MB XD from Fuji. You will need to buy one, because most camera manufacturers only supply a useless 16MB card or similar. At 6 megapixels on my Fuji F10, I can get about 160 photos on. However, finding that 6MP is excessive, and shooting on 3MP, I can get closer to 400+ images on the card. It is a lot of money for something the size of a postage stamp, but the Amazon price is very good (honestly!). Card comes in a protective plastic case too.

I love this camera!

I really do! My sister gave me her old Fujifilm camera when she got this one (in a different colour) and it was like a brick- so naturally I wanted one like hers, and I'm so glad I bought it. Best £100 I've spent in ages.

The camera takes a fantastic picture, and uses software that locates faces and modifies the light around them to improve picture quality and remove red eye. The finish is great- it's polished and feels smooth in your hands. The camera turns on by sliding open the lens and the whole thing is as easy to use as that.

Other than the colour and the metallic finish, what I really like is the battery. No more hunting around for triple AAA's, this camera includes a battery more like you would have in your mobile phone, which you remove to charge separately.

The camera comes with everything you need- the right leads and cables, a wrist tag to hold it with- except a case. You'll want one to stop it getting scratched up. The only other thing you might need is a memory card, but it does already have internal memory, so it really depends on how much space you need.

All in all a great looking camera, easy to use, fantastic picture, and a price you can't argue with! Five stars.

Great bridging camera at a nice price.

The Good:

The 12x zoom allows for nice wide angle shots, moving through to close tele shots.
The 10M pixel sensor, nicely detailed, works beautifully in low lights
Takes HCSD cards so you can get 4, 8 or even 16Gb cards to work in it.
Face recognition works well
Good quality optics
Nicely detailed high res rear screen
Good selection of shooting modes, allowing you to experiment a lot further than that compact you've been using
Good range of shutter speeds (8s to 1/2000)
Powers up from 4xAA sized batteries, should your camera die whilst out and about, you can get power from almost any corner shop, battery life is best described as ok, it lasts long enough, but i get the feeling that using 4 batteries it should be more.
Really light (especially if you compared this camera to an SLR with lenses to cover the same focal lengths)
Nice chunky design that feels well made, yet has good ergonomics, everything for framing and taking a shot falls readily to hand
The EVF (electronic viewfinder) is handy in sunny conditions
Seems to take good photo's that print well

The bad

The lens only has apertures from f2.8 to f5.0 I would have expected a bigger range (my wifes older s5700 goes down to f6.3)
Flash does not pop up automatically (my wife has the older s5700, and it does this on hers)
The front of the lens has no thread mount to allow the use of filters, a camera thats in the bridging section of the market should really be offering this.
No image stabilisation, with a zoom this long some form of stabilisation would be a usefull.
The lens cap is just a push on affair, and has a habit of slipping off easily when in your pocket. Had fuji put the thread for filters on, they could have used a proper gripping design, that wont pop off so easily.
The LCD screen is inset, I get the feeling it will be hard to clean dust out of the corners.
The image quality on the EVF (electronic viewfinder) is not so good this is not to say its poor, but a higher quality would be nicer, and if it stuck out a bit would stop nose prints in the rear screen when using it.
Autofocus can be a bit slow.
The door to access the batteries and memory car feels secure enough when fitted, but the hinge feels a bit odd while off. I'm not saying it will fall off after a few openings, but i feel that over time this could become a weak point.

The Ugly:

If you have small hands this may feel a bit to chunky.
This is definitely a right handed camera, with the exception of the flash pop up button, all the controlls are on the right hand side
Comes with a neck strap, personally i'd have liked to see a wrist strap included as well (I took the wrist strap from my old camera to use on this) I say this because as a right hander with big hands i find i can operate the camera single handed.
Your hand can get in the way of the AF light while using the camera.
Theres a panorama mode, that will stitch 3 photos together in landscape, in reality 3 differently exposed photos are stitched together, this means to get it all to work you have to be carefull about matching exposures, (it takes a bit of practice).

To summerise:

Its a good camera, lightweight yet well made. Takes good photos, and generally a good step forewards if you are wanting a bit more creative freedom than that compact you have offers. This is a true bridging camera, allowing a taste of DSLR usage with some of the convenience of a compact. Also be tempted by that 12x zoom, its proved itself for me every time i've had the camera out.

Whilst not without its faults (most annoying being the ease with which the lens cap pops off) they are all minor things that shouldn't put you off.

All in all I'd reccomend this camera to anyone (plus a few sets of rechargable batteries!) I'm happy with mine.
